From 6 April 2027, the rules will change completely. The government is bringing unused pension funds and death benefits into the value of your taxable estate under updated inheritance Tax rules on pensions. For years, pensions were one of the safest ways to pass wealth to the next generation. While the tax office took a cut of cash savings, property, and investments, unused pension pots sat outside your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. This change means a pot of money that was once tax-free could suddenly face a 40% IHT bill, making effective inheritance Tax planning more important than ever.
The Financial Knock-on Effect
If you have spent years building up a substantial pension with the aim of leaving it to your family, these new rules completely alter your position. When you pass away, your pension provider will have to report the value of your remaining pot to your executors. This figure will then be added to the value of your home, savings, and personal belongings.
If the total goes over your available tax-free allowances, the excess is taxed. Critically, this extra value could also push your total estate over the £2 million mark. If that happens, you start to lose the Residence Nil Rate Band, the extra tax relief used when passing down a family home, leading to a much higher overall bill.

What You Need to Do
With the 2027 deadline approaching, you need to check your pension nominations. Most schemes use an “expression of wish” form to decide who gets your funds. Outdated forms can cause massive delays during probate, making a difficult time even harder for your beneficiaries.
Reviewing your wills, trusts, and asset distribution now is the only way to protect your legacy, including ensuring your will arrangements reflect your wishes.
